I know cats and dogs are a different species, but we would use valium and hydromorphone together as part of anesthesia. Granted, anesthesia was carefully monitored, and hydromorphone is nowhere near as strong as Fentanyl. Also we were operating on cats and dogs, not pigs (;

Species is identical in this case: Pigs. ;P

Ya, the combo is used for anesthesia. But like you said it is monitored. They can tell how shallow your breathing gets and how slow your heart rate gets. It is essentially a medically induced coma. A person getting high or self medicating rarely knows how much to take and isn't frugal about the dose. If things get out of hand during an anesthesia, there are drugs on hand to reverse the effects immediately (Narcan).

I only say this because we had huge opiate epidemic in my area. Everyone I know who isn't with us any more died by mixing those two drugs.
