I asked for sedation for mine since I was scared shitless and had never been pregnant before. The gynecologist told me to take 1 or 2 of my Ativan before going in, and to have someone else drive me. It actually went in pretty quickly, it was getting it back out after 2 years that was the problem.

Well now I'm scared of the removal... what happened?

The strings were cut too short by the original OB so they got "lost" up inside my cervix. I had to see another OB to have the IUD removed. It hurt a fair bit because she had to open my cervix to get the IUD but the pain went away pretty quickly. And it was partially my fault too for neglecting to check where the strings were every month like you're supposed to.
