There is often a cutoff time of 6 or 8 hours, so they can re-open roads and let the organizers go home. But not always. Ragen Chastain did a marathon in just over 12 hours, and thus was last by about 4 hours.

I've been noticing that more and more. Marathons are cool and 5k/10k races are fun and challenging. But when roads are still diverted for hours after the race should have ended its just ridiculous. Generally in races I've been in they follow and reopen roads as the race progresses. So for each segment there is minimal impact on local populace. But I've also seen, recently, where the beginning of the race is still closed when the first runner crosses the finish line.

Bottom line, fat people ruin it for everyone. If letting fats run is the going trend, I can see local municipals not wanting to support 5k and 10k runs which will be saddening.
