give via monthly donation by sponsoring a couple of kids in third world countries where hunger is very much a real, actual, genuine threat.

Could be because of the overpopulation.......caused by to much help from the outside and zero self sufficiency on the inside. Foreign aid hurts the third world, it doesn't help it.

The charity I give to actually works with the local communities to help develop self sufficiency. After they have reached that phase in a particular community they pull out of the area. They also use part of the money to give micro loans for the locals to start up their own local businesses. They dig wells that will last, teach people different farming techniques, etc... Their gift catalog includes items like x number of chickens or x number of ducks, a cow and other farm animals with the logic being that those animals will breed and multiply and provide fresh eggs to eat, milk, meat, etc...

It's a hand up not a hand out. This was a major factor in my decision to give to this particular charity. I know no charity is perfect just like no person is perfect (including myself) and I'm sure that someone working in or with that charity does something that I wouldn't personally approve of or like but overall they are a well respected charity and have been around for a long time.

I did my research before handing over my money. I specifically didn't want to contribute to a charity that was just walking around handing out free shit. Part of the reason why I decided not to contribute to certain charities in my own nation and certainly the reason why I don't give money to people on the street begging.

One of the children I "sponsor" wants to become a nurse, the other a teacher. I don't see how my contributing and actually being the reason why one of these children can afford school things to actually be able to attend school is a bad thing. Just my opinion and just something that I wanted to do.
