Why Github?

It's actually a good place for curated lists of things. Take for instance https://github.com/vinta/awesome-python, https://github.com/sorrycc/awesome-javascript, and https://github.com/ziadoz/awesome-php

You get an okay looking markdown-formatted document hosted for free, which is the main point. You can keep a clone of the repository anywhere and just hoist it on another git hosting site in case it gets taken down (which I think is very unlikely). You also open up for the possibility of collaboration, including a review process.

Sure, a code-centric platform like git(hub) is probably not the perfect fit for this. But it gets the job done. It was the first thing that popped up in my mind (I suggested github to Carsandsarcasm).

It means I can create a list of actual links rather than source text. It's much cleaner this way.

I get that, but wouldn't a blogging platform be more appropriate than a remote code repository?
