I'm sure it has to measure O2, hydration, potassium, sodium, and glucose levels and keep the flow regulated within a certain limit as so that it's not pumping so fast as that the gas exchange in the lungs is ineffective or so slow that he passes out. At least my guess as a someone who got his medical degree from hospital dramas.
