For me it was what I used to use to self medicate for my anxiety disorder. It would sound strange to those who haven't been there. But there is an endorphin rush that actually helps relieve the feeling of anxiousness. Fortunately I have turned to healthier options to manage this issue. But I am not without scars.

Sadly the healthier options never do as good a job. As a former cutter I know.

It's been a combination of therapy and making some different lifestyle choices. I find that very strenuous physical activity a couple days a week has a good affect. I haven't been able to work out that intensly because of pregnancy though. (While I am not currently dealing with issues that risk the baby, I have to keep things toned down in order to prevent certian risks.) So it has been harder to manage. Fortunately I am more than a decade past the time I was at my worst. So it isn't as hard to cope when the anxiety builds. I still have anxiety attacks. But I also have a supportive husband to help me through it. I also believe that if natural aproaches don't help, medication is always a valid option. Different people have differing severity of symptoms. And so that sometimes neccitates different treatments.
I think that I manage well with the mental health issues I do have to deal with (combo of ocpd and anxiety.) Part of life is doing your best with the hand you have been dealt. I'm happy to say that aside from a few issues that come up occasionally, I am at a place where I live a fairly normal life. Knowing my weaknesses means that I can challange them.
