My boyfriend's Chinese mother told me one time "You gain[ed] a little weight." loudly in English, in public. I had, maybe 5 pounds. It was the first thing she said to me in the restaurant. It was a greeting (I don't know how to describe it). It wasn't meant as malicious, she just let me know I looked like I gained a few. Fats around us were not pleased and some beast told me in passing I looked beautiful. Next time I saw her, in the same fat infested restaurant, first thing she said was "You skinnier, better than last time." You could hear the galaxy behind us choke on her food after hearing the comment and feel her stare daggers through the meal.

Side note: My boyfriend always says "If it is in English it is shitlording, if it is in Chinese it is the truth." Not exactly sure what it means but he says it a lot.

I guess what he means is that we have created a label for fatshaming, when in China it's a natural thing to do.

That and if she says in it English, its so the fats can 'overhear' her.
