I think what used to get me hooked on stuff like Warcraft 2 and Age of Empires was grouping up large cohesive warbanfs and taking strategic play to the next level, like having three or four armies of 20 bombard cannons and fucktons of janisseries in AOE moving about the map and having them surround then fuck up enemy formations.
I never gave a single solitary fuck about individually named 'heroes' but loved proper tactical planning and execution.
That shit keeps me coming back for more.

its a 50/50 mix of the two generally. giving a unit an identity, usually also means they're incredibly powerful like a champion or commander
