''Those that hate statistics are the most prejudiced. They hate statistics because their mind only knows stereotypes, so when they see statistics, they interpret it as stereotypes and project it onto those who don't''. In other words, they can only see stereotypes, so they project that everyone else can only see stereotypes when in fact others see statistics.
The reality is that we discriminate based on statistics all the time and that sometimes the exceptions fall victim, but overall the practice is undoubtedly superior. If it weren't superior, we wouldn't use it when it's not worth it.
you may ask, what is the difference between statistics and stereotypes?
Stereotypes are a product of system 1
(https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thinking,_Fast_and_Slow), they are an irrational heuristic which does not consider proportion or probability.
Statistics on the other hand, engage atleast at some point, system 2, which is rational consciousness, then system 2 can weigh in 2 things:
[The value of the probability that the person is the most likely part of the statistics and the value of the probability that the person is an exception] when discrimination is applied.
VS
[The value of the probability that the person is the most likely part of the statistics and the value of the probability that the person is an exception] when discrimination is not applied.
for example, it may be that discriminating against a few innocent exceptions is more damaging according to one's values, then accepting the risk of the norm.
