College is seldom about thinking or learning anymore.

This couldn't be less true in my experience. Though there were multiple distractions, college certainly was about thinking and learning for me, and I believe it was for most of my peers.

Did you (anyone reading) go to college? Was it not about thinking and learning for you?

I also have been thinking that oversimplifications like that harm the discourse. Too often, both in politics and history, we are told about ideologies that turn you into a zombie, not being able to think for yourself. That is not true, you just think about other things and within a different framework.

Damn, now I have to read the article since it wouldn't be honorable to discuss a secondary matter without considering the main thesis of the author. I just came here for a summary!

Edit: I'm not saying all ideologies are equally valuable, just that this simplification leads to both being unprepared when someone has terrible beliefs and also to demonize those whose beliefs are different from ours.
