"it gets better" in lot cases is interpreted "i don't really believe you" - in episodes of heavy depression sufferer (or not to generalise, i do) feel that there is no reasonable way, how could situation get better. in a way it totally negates my experience of world at the moment and my feelings about the experience, leading to feeling of alienation and unwillingness to continue talking.

this view is backed by research into depression and suicidology. on internet, there is no way for you to handle the case, if your "it gets better" backfires and sufferer feels alienated.

these rules are there for a reason and echoes in simplified way the guidelines of psychotherapists.
