I am the child of 2 hoarders and they passed their habits to me. I'm not bad enough to be on any TV shows although my parents' house could probably be on Hoarders. But I will hold on to things either because I think I will find a use for it later or I develop sentimental attachment to the item.
My wife likes to collect pint glasses but we have slowly been running out of space of them. This weekend I went one cabinet in kitchen and started to throw out empty liquor bottles. I probably ended up tossing a cubic yard of bottles. Handles from 5 years ago, duplicate bottles, bottles from liquors that aren't made anymore or ones I don't like. I still kept several bottles either because they were a gift from a friend or its a small bottle of a liquor that I will fill up when the handle gets low so its taking up less space in the bar.
After tossing all the bottles, I ended up with a lot more cabinet space so I could finally put away all the pint glasses that had been collecting on the counter.
