I'm in the process of moving, and had planned to take more time sorting and decluttering but will have an opportunity to later. Still, leaving behind/getting rid of a bunch of stuff from over the years. Clothes, papers, misc. items. Feels good!

So... you're planning on Moving all of your clutter?

I've never understood this (though see it frequently), people who box up stuff, arrive at a new place and some boxes remain untouched for years.

Do it now, while you're packing. It's MUCH easier to move less stuff (and cheaper if you're paying someone else). The litmus is, if you haven't touched it, looked at it (for art/collectables), worn it or used it in the last Year, pitch it. My ONE exception is my $$$ formal wear (suits, wifes fancy dresses/jewelry). We may not wear it yearly, but we bought timeless quality items so it'd be available when needed. It all fits in a small armoire that's part of our 1930's Art Deco bedroom suite.

I say this as someone who moved Frequently for the military. It is much nicer to NOT move stuff that just sits around without place or purpose. On a side note, if you think you'll "start over" somewhere different and things will be different somehow, think again. Unless you go through the massive effort of personal change, which is FAR harder than decluttering, your life will fall into the same rut it's in now. I used to think a new place would fix XYZ issue/complaint, but it never did and often just added a new one.

I know what you mean, and most of it's been moved already to storage, but most of what has been moved is being kept anyway. Most of the de-cluttering is being done on the fly.

I DO have a bunch of stuff I'd eventually like to sell or donate, but time is not on my side for sorting all that now. I mean, no one needs 8 guitars, especially since I'm not playing but time and a few other things are a major factor there. I totally get what you mean though; once I hit the basement here this week, that will be a large pile of stuff gone that I'm not dragging around. Already gotten rid of some furniture and whatnot. Clothes, etc.

As for the starting over, trust me on this one...it's going to work splendidly. I'm doing the personal homework and such, but a lot of it is directly tied to where I'm living now and by default, it will get rid of some mental clutter, as it were. I'm almost 40, been in the workforce for 25 years and I'm at that point with no wife, no kids...that I want to take a little time, step back, do some traveling, and figure out what I'm going to do. I work in IT now and could move around. Or I could move to one of a few places I've been looking at and get a little more back to basics, out of the big city rate race.

But this is a big change I've been actively working towards for the last 6 months. After about 2 1/2 years of crippling depression, and a mountain of other shit. It has been, quite literally, a country song. Lost my vehicle, woman, dog, cat, booze doesn't work. There's been a lot more but what has been going on, cannot continue...so I'm taking control before someone tries to do it for me.

Thanks for the time in replying and writing that up, I do appreciate it and I will take it to heart. I hope someone else can also benefit as well.

EDIT - Final thought - I've been doing the work on the foundation - mentally and spiritually, before I got to this point. So I don't have to go back and revisit all that and have a house built on sand.

Thanks; right now I'm going for the fresh start. Taxes are killing me, my area/market is very hot right now and I bought at the bottom 6 years ago.

So, cash out, get out, new memories, walls, etc. Going for more flexibility right now as I am examining potential opportunities to relocate or just start completely over somewhere new.
