That strategy works very well in Germany. Almost nobody has a gun at home. Guess what happens.

Burgler's don't bring a gun either, because there is no need. As a result, its rare that anybody is injured in a break in.

That hole "get armed and defend yourself" philosophy may sound intuitive, but in reality is not helpful to anybody (well, except to populist politicians who gain easy votes with some tough speeches).

That's way too simplified. In Germany, it is much harder for the criminal to get a gun in the first place. Rifles and shotguns are more difficult to conceal, not to mention the license needed. Handguns are only a thing in gun clubs, and you cannot take it home until you have some amount of seniority.

There is obviously a black market, but when, like you say, there is much less of a need, there is no reason to go to the trouble.
