Start with a .22lr pistol for practice, learn sight picture and trigger control etc... Do this before you start with any other firearm. Work your way up from there. If you know nothing about guns, jumping right into some big bore isn't going to be good for you. Take a class at a local range or find some locals to take you out shooting.

As for something to carry, 9mm with good loads is the best blend of low recoil/control-ability with tissue damage. There are a lot of light, concealable single stack 9mm's. Here's a good comparison of some recent models. http://www.gunsandammo.com/handguns/compacts/single-stack-9mm-shootout/

I recommend Hornady Critical Duty or Hydrashok Low Recoil.

Other compacts with double stack magazines are good as well. Springfield, CZ, and Glock all make great ones.

Find a local range that rents firearms and try several of them out, get a feel for it before you buy it.
