And if you REALLY want to get on your Help Desk technician's good side, give him/her food. Baked goods, sandwiches, pizza, etc.. "Glad you're here; we're having pizza -- want a slice?" "You all are always such a big help when I call, so I baked the team brownies just to say thanks."

If people didn't use tech support for simple common sense things, we could reduce tech support positions. I think that would be worse than putting diapers on tech babies, and also why much of tech-support has been outsourced to third world countries where someone can read from a small set of responses and resolve a lot of silly problems, but aren't any good when there's an actual issue. Microsoft, for example, uses that kind of low-level outsourced tech support and it drives me insane.
