I try for a river/mountain spot and pump science. My second city is usually built for production and third is for happiness/luxuries. Sometimes due to circumstances the second and third are switched.
I'll start. I go for a river usually, I try to get a river and something such as wheat/deer/bananas so I can get growth from the waterwheel building and extra food once a granary is built.
The downside for something like that is that occasionally my cities are lacking production until aluminium is discovered.

River - Unique buildings (water mill, hydro plant); food bonus for fresh water; Defense bonus.
Hill - Early game production boost means first scouts on the board, and more goody huts for you; Defense bonus.
Mountain - Observatory; Neuschwanstein on the rare occasion I go for a wide empire.
Generally, flood plains are my favorite start, because of desert folklore, and Petra. You can get some insane production out of your hills with religious community (15% prod bonus), and Petra.
Edit: I never reroll. You can't do that in multi-player games so it is good for practice in single player games.
Sort: Top

I rarely reroll, and I never move my settler more than one square. I will move them to a hill though, depending on what I can see in the nearby land.
I hope for a good balance.

That's a pretty long wait, though.

yeah it is, but deer are usually in forest so there's some production there, and i can always ship in some production with internal trade routes.

you can't actually benefit from floodplains with petra!

True, but I was thinking of the desert hills which get an extra hammer, which means 5 production for each mine, once you discover chemistry.
