I've got a trio of Australorp girls (the max allowed in my city) I have some sturdy fences in the corner of my yard where their current costco-bought coop+run is located. The rest of my fences... not so much with the sturdy, plus some plants they shouldn't be browsing on.
I've been letting them out when I have a few minutes for a bit of a run-around, and I have a large-ish dog crate using for a chicken tractor, but I need to give them a bigger run- the prebuilt coop is too small. My current plans are to make another two walls out of wood and hog wire, with hardware cloth on the first four feet or so and maybe chicken wire for the top part. (We do have raccoons in the area)
My question is this: How sturdy should I make the roof of my run? Should I go for corrugated fiberglass, or use something like shade cloth? or something in between? (Chicken wire for the roof?) They'll have their original coop/run for shelter during any rain.
Very interested in hearing your thoughts!
