I'm with you on the first one. I shouldn't need anyone's permission to strap on the old family .38 to go cycling or hiking down my town's nature trails or anywhere else. I bring that example up because we do have a coyote problem so I'm stuck carrying my Ka-bar instead.
As for police, as long as they're required to return the firearms I understand them requesting to hold them during traffic stops. I'm not happy about it but I'll allow that as long as they return the guns.

I have a few concerns about it. First I've seen first hand a cop drop a confiscated firearm. Good luck getting them to pay for any damage to your weapon they caused. Are you going to trust a weapon that has been dropped with your life? To me that means a trip to the range to check function. Then you have them taking the weapon out of your sight, copying serial numbers and putting you on lists.. That opens up new problems. You have to trust that they didn't do anything to the gun to hinder is operation either maliciously or accidentally. Those are just problems that don't need to be created.
I understand cops are scared but, They should change the way things are done. If you want to hand me a lock box and have me lock it up on my dash where only I have access to it fine but, don't go taking it back to your car for 20 mins doing god knows what.
