I already built my own cat tree with 2*4s and ply wood since spending $200 for some pressed cardboard feels ridicules.
Most cat trees are shit, anyway, in terms of design. If you're handy, you can learn from what your cats do/don't like when you build the next one. I'd think about cleaning. A lot of these ideas look cool but would be such a bitch to clean when covered in vomit.

This is the cat tree i built from leftover construction materials. it is sturdy enough for me to climb on it.
