How can it possibly be illegal to remind people to obey the law?

It costs money to contest a ticket, so the legality is often a non-issue, people are forced to pay for a kangaroo court or forced to pay the ticket, or they don't allow renewal of vehicle registration and/or throw you in jail. Kind of like, "you can beat the rap, but you can't beat the ride". A little reminder that the only rights you have are those that you can avail yourself of through threat of force (none for most people).

The point of the speed trap isn't to get people to slow down and increase safety; its' purpose is to bring in revenue. This man was jeopardizing the revenue by increasing safety, and therefore must be fined in the eyes of the department.

Where I'm from, kids would do this all the time outside of the high school. Perfectly legal.

Canadians have been convinced they don't have the right to free speech.

Warning motorists about speed trap nets man $543 stunting ticket - Edmonton - CBC News

'"I'm going to seize this sign as evidence, and I'm going to need to see ID from you," he said. '

'He said he was held in the police car for about 30 minutes, then released with the $543 stunting ticket. '

'An Edmonton man who says he was just trying to do a "good deed" is angry about getting a $543 ticket for warning motorists about a speed trap. '

'Salim El-Daccache was given the ticket for stunting on Feb.16 after he held up a handwritten sign with the warning "Laser slow down."'

'The officer warned: "If you lie to me about your name, I'm going to arrest you for obstruction. '
