I guess the broadest outline of my preferences would be "philosophical fiction."
First and foremost, I read science fiction, but I'm not much for hard science or space opera. More, I like science fiction because it allows for the exploration of pretty much any idea with any characters in any setting. And I tend toward the things that are more philosophical and/or social commentary - Gene Wolfe, Neal Stephenson, A.A. Attanasio, William Gibson, Ursula K. LeGuin, Neil Gaiman...
If I'm not reading science fiction, I tend toward the more overt philosophical literature - either classics like Dostoevsky or Hesse or Sartre or more modern and/or lighter variations like Marquez or Vonnegut or Tom Robbins.
Every once in a while though, for a bit of a change, I indulge in some straightforward action/adventure or mystery, preferably with a bit of humor - Carl Hiaasen is a perfect example.
