I looked this up on wikipedia to see if I could remember having read it (I don't think I have), and it says:

I read it when I was 13-14, so maybe I don't have a mature enough perspective on the book but I found it to be a good read. It seemed really fleshed out. The suspense and the terror not being shoved in your face by the outright presence of spooky aliens was cool to me.

The first quarter of the book was riveting for me, then something happened and it just wasn't the same, as if Mr King had put it away for months and then picked it up again. But, no, Idon't think it was meant as a comedy.
