The zombie apocalypse is a suitably modern myth. You keyed into it, the age of mass man. Its relevant because the capacity for man at mass and its danger is best expressed in an unending, relentless horde. And while death is the 'magic' of it, the metaphor shows its truth like all great myths when society stops. If the roads close, if the power stops, if any number of things happen. And riots like we see just because people want to loot and are bored will be eclipsed when the first world mass of man experiences a true return to privation, and there will be a zombie apocalypse.
