While on the theme of depressing books I just started 1984. First few pages and everything looks ogre.

That's one of my all time favorites. I hope you enjoy it!

I really enjoyed War and Peace. However, after reading the "war" parts it was tough to go back to the drawing room drama. It's great though. Check it out

My favorite scene is the funeral dinner where the lady is hacking up blood and simultaneously talking shit about the riff raff at the table. What a great book.

Honestly one of my favorite books. Couldn’t recommend it enough along with the rest of the Russian classics. I had very vivid dreams about morality the week after I finished it!

Been in my audiobook que for some time now. Maybe I'll jump on it next.

I'll definitely check it out. Since it's a novella I should be able to read it in one or two nights. Thanks for the suggestion.

I also loved it and was super surprised by how much I liked it

As far as classics go this is about as good as it gets.

I'm currently reading a newer translation by Michael Katz, it's very good so far. I'd recommend this or the David McDuff (Penguin Classics edition) translation for first time English readers.
