If you go to the project gutenberg website, and find the book you want, click on the link, choose the one you want to download, (I usually use epub) and the link will ask you if you want to open it in "Books." Click yes, and it will download it to your ipad, and you can read it with the Books app. Haven't tried the kindle app.

I'd go with a Kobo Clara HD. You can get a more expensive one if you like. Your options are pretty much either Kobo or Kindle, Kobo costs a little more but you can import ebooks you downloaded for free wight off the bat. Kindle you might be able to but you ahve to do some software stuff.
