I have done it several times but I dont always mind reading a book twice. I have done it deliberately before.

I started reading a biography of Ronald Reagan and got through quite a bit of it before I realized I'd read it before.

Was it just super boring or what?

No. It just happens sometimes with presidential bios because there are so many of them that it's hard to keep track.

Yep. It's almost like a really creepily specific sense of deja vu.

A few times. Pulp fiction type shit, not any that were worth remembering turns out.

Started? I've gotten about 2/3 through before I realized.

Curiously, it seems it is some tiny detail there gives it away, not something big like the setting, plot or characters.

Only once, that I can recall, was it a full-length novel.

In some other cases it was in an anthology of short stories or an excerpt or something like that.

It has happened to me with serial novels of six or more books. I'll pick up one with out realizing I've read this one before.

Several times as well as films.

I do that with movies sometimes. Read the book and forget about it then watch the movie and wonder why I knew what was about to happen
