I buy almost all my books online. Thriftbooks and Abebooks have massive inventories of books that you simply cannot find in stores.
Barnes and Nobles is great for their magazine section. I rarely buy books there (although, I did get my copy of Infinite Jest there. I had no intention of buying that book beforehand. I guess brick-and-mortar shops aren't totally useless.).
