Might I suggest you make an apk available to download for people with app sideloading enabled?

This. I just did a complete reflash for an OTA update. Gonna reroot and setup, then do a fresh TWRP backup from there. I'm sure I've got the apk in one of my existing backups, but its generally easier to get it from play or a dev, especially if you've indeed updated it some more.

might the takedown be related to the move on youtube to make things more "advertiser friendly?" Sure, the youtube issue is the most visible, by the nature of its platform, but similar pruning might be happening across all of the adwords platforms, for all we know. Perhaps its the presence of google adwords ads in the free version, combined with voat's general "Objectionable content" that led to the app becoming a point of contention. It would explain the fact that the paid version is still available (though weirdly enough, boats gold got removed for me, and the old boats remained, but only shows the splashscreen when opened. Probably a bug from both installs being ancient, and my device being a fairly rare, old one)

Use F-Droid for this situation. You'd be able to update everything and not need to deal with (Google's) policies

I just typed Voat on google play and this app came up, the free version. I haven't try downloading it yet cause I wanted to check to see if this site was talking about it as a half-assed legitimacy test.

So, question: have you talked to u/Putitout about this phone app, and does he approve of it?

I don't understand your question, but I'll answer anyway:

We actually work together because he created the API that I use in the app.

There's a direct link to Boats on the front-page on the right side under mobile apps.
