There's no particular advantage in starting now unless you could keep the number below some threshold. It still collects on the blockchain and will need to be handled at some point.

People who used satoshi dice a lot had this problem. I remember there was a guy (reddit iirc) who had written some code to do it and was charging for his expertise. Maybe that's open source now.

Looks like someone's trying exactly that right now: https://tradeblock.com/blockchain/tx/63f3f7599a071ac55201179eab89a2306bf51bdfaf6a8f7eccad9cb9254ebf34

EDIT: Better example, actual mined block - https://tradeblock.com/blockchain/block/364292

According to r/Bitcoin,

[that block] was manually created by F2Pool, transactions larger than 100KB don't relay through the network. ... They charitably reduced the size of the UTXO database.

Before posting this I did some googling and someone was saying that when pruned mining starts, the miners are going to want to have incentives to keep the UTXO database small... So... miners would want to give transactions that consolidate UTXOs a higher priority, like an implied fee added to them... also, wallets have incentive to consolidate too (to some extent)... but this would eventually make dust like this easier to spend (little or no fees for gathering it).

I was also thinking like you said, to keep the number below some threshold, before their wallet software starts having problems... also... would annoy the spammer if all the dust was gathered up... I imagine.

But... if the software doesn't yet exist to do this.. well.. someone has to write it.
