You might change your mind on that if you hung around my neck of the woods for a little while.

Thousands. I'm not kidding, thousands of bats emanate from the city gardens at dusk, out into the suburbs to feed on fruit trees. Nightmare fuel. They're cute though, if you can get close to one. If you're out at night you hear them chirping and screeching, they'll come flying out of the trees as you walk past. There's a spot down the road from my house where they just hang out in the big old pine trees, walking through there at night is wild.

Also because we have fruit bats in Australia, we've had issues with hendra virus, which is carried by several species of fruit bats. Though that's been mostly within the north-eastern part of the country.
