There is a very big difference between a fetus and a severely handicapped individual. I think /u/BrentStrong may have misused that analogy. It's that there is no consciousness in a fetus until the central nervous system and brain are developed. Therefore it is not life, just a conglomeration of cells with the potential for life.

I'm going to have to disagree with you on that one. There are of course several cases of brain death and DNRs where it does happen, we have decided as a society to respect life.
