Yes, the Bible promotes loving your neighbor, but it also promotes all kinds of obscenely evil things. The only way you can make the Bible seem like a moral guide is by cherry-picking the morally good passages. In order to do this, you have to have an already-existing moral standard against which to judge the Bible. So why not dispense with the Bible and just apply this standard directly?
