Do you believe in only the material physical world and things that can be proven via empirical evidence?

Or do you believe there is a metaphysical world as well?

Not the OP, but my $0.2

Theists and Atheists use the word "believe" to mean very different things. Atheist do not believe in anything the same way Theists do.

I think a better term is "accept". I accept things that have solid evidence to back them up. This acceptance is actually a scale, from things I do not accept at all, to things I kind of accept, to things I accept completely. All related to the evidence available.

So, coming to your question. I do not accept any metaphysical concepts as I haven't seen any real evidence to support them.

Thanks for the response. I know what you mean about accepting vs believing, not trying to straw man. Agreed, evidence is vital.

I do not accept any metaphysical concepts as I haven't seen any real evidence to support them.

I think here's where theists and atheists get off on the wrong foot from the get go. Atheists are looking for physical empirical evidence for metaphysical things. So the concern is what we define as evidence.

If you presuppose that only empirical physical evidence exists, I believe you have an internal contradiction in your own accepted evidences.

Where do numbers exist? If you destroyed all physical evidences of numbers, could you get them to cease existing?

What about the laws of logic? How is it the law of non contradiction exists without empirical evidence? Where is the physical evidence for the law of non contradiction?

What about the "self"? All cells in our body undergo complete changes over and over throughout our life yet there is a consistency that we call our "self" or "consciousness" or "awareness". How is it that all physical evidence points towards change yet there is not?

These are metaphysical concepts that all people believe and use on a day to day basis but under the worldview of atheism/materialism/empiricism, cannot be properly explained or accepted without assuming an entirely incoherent world (randomness abounds).

you do realize that Atheism is a religion right?

[–] industrialfish [S] 0 points 4 points (+4|-0) ago

Lol, not really. There are plenty of fanatic atheists that have meetings, protest churches, hand out flyers, and they ARE no better then the religions they hate.

Then there are the true ones that simply don't follow any religion nor give a fuck about anyone else's.

They don't exist. There is no such thing as an 'a-religious' person. It simply doesn't exist. the hard core atheists are obssesed with Science...and Science in itself is a religion ergo...atheists worship religion. It's inescapable.

So why post or are you one of the "fanatics"? You do realize that atheism is still a theism correct?
