For centuries Christianity was the main force of civilization in Europe, teaching people everything from compasion, to work ethics, to not farting at the dinner table; even The Inquisition, portrayed today as evil, was at the time one of the fairest and modern judicial systems in Europe.
That's an extremely one-sided recollection of history. Christianity was also the main force used to conquer and subjugate millions of non-Christians. Christianity is a complete contradiction of itself, since it (i.e. the Bible) teaches us to be both compassionate and ruthless.
European Kings baptised willingly, churches moved in and began teaching the new religion, a religion culturally and intellectually considered superior to paganism. As far as I now that is how it worked in most of Europe.
What does "subjugate millions of non-Christians" even mean when talking of Europe a thousand years ago? Are you saying they would have been free people if not for Christianity?

I am guessing they are referring to things like the holy wars.
