My personal advise is dont do software. I have many reasons, including I have done software and I've gotten into this discussion before I cant be bothered doing it again.
My professional advice is that there are countless under the radar software companies out there. I worked for some small businesses before that had massive clients. In these cases, youre looking for their customers and not so much the employer themselves. The businesses I have done work for are completely unheard of, but their clients are the selling point on a resume.

Do you have any thoughts on those shady Indian companies, that “train” you, then farm you out for $12 / hour? Good start, or not worth the 2 year contract?

Im having a hard time believing you are real.
If I looked at an indians resume and saw they worked for an indian developer for an extended period of time I would not hire them. The way they code and manage that code is akin to the way you feel when youre in india. Full of diarrhoea. More than once I have worked with a dev team from india and I might as well have just drunk my own piss. It made more sense than what these people did. Sri lankans though, theyre good.
