Told in the broadest of strokes, it seems like a setting that has some interesting potential, but things are just so absolutely hopeless and grim that I can't find anyone to identify with, or root for.
Yep the First Law series of books. The first had a decent story and some interesting characters but by the end of the first 3 books I was hoping most of the main characters would die. I read one follow up book in the series and it was painful to be introduced to a new set of unlikeable characters, who did shit things because they could. Since the novelty of the new world wasn't there like it was with the first series, I found it awful to read. The books are well written though, so if you can get past the stuff I mentioned, I'd recommend them.
GRRM met with the creators of the show and fed them all the plot details. I imagine in Winds of Winter Stannis will no longer be the mannis but I guess anything is possible.
I love the books, but he does have an obsessive habit of just creating new random characters that add nothing to the plot while abandoning old characters with little explanation.
Evangelion. I was happy to stop watching that show after End of Evangelion. Not a single good review or word of mouth could get me to watch the show that started up after.

They are gritty/sword and sorcery novels

Sometimes Westeros gets into that territory. Right after I was pretty much like let the Night King win.

I wished I still cared at that point...god those turned into such a slog. I'm glad HBO is turning them into an intelligible story.

The last book of Harry Potter made things too unstable. Characters started to die a bit too fast rate.
