Of course. You can't run a business, or a site of this size, without some form of money flow to support it. And, you can't expect one person, or two, to work and take care of other responsibilities, pay for a site like this out of pocket, and dedicate the time needed to keep it running smoothly and following their vision.

There are many ways they could make money with Voat, and I fully support them.

I agree whole heartedly, just so long as the whole site isn't put behind a paywall.

No doubt. Don't shove them down our throats. But, I can deal with ads, as long as they aren't trying to hide it, or make the whole site a money making ad slut.

Insta-Edit: I'd even click a bunch of ads as long as they were up front, and non-forceful. Give 'em that 10 cents.

I would, though I would prefer to donate.

Yes, but donations are obviously not going to run this site forever. A purely donation based system would be "amazeballs", but it just isn't feasible, sadly...

Well, Wikipedia does it and they serve content to people worldwide.

One man's donation is another man's windfall.

At my time of life, the last thing anyone should receive from me is an expectation of monthly payments because they could cease, quite expectedly, as I'm too fucking old to for anyone with a brain cell to have an expectation of my actually fulfilling a long term commitment.

4chan runs on minimal unintrusive ads (most probably adblocked by the majority of the regular userbase) and a simple pay-to-skip-captcha system that was created only because people were always asking for a way to donate. Unlike Voat, which deals mainly with text, 4chan has a lot of image traffic that's sure to generate plenty of bandwidth usage.

It is possible to run a relatively big website without going full commercial.

Make sense. What are you talking about?

Yes. The site is already crawling with trolls making money off his hard work. Give him the chance to earn the money needed to keep the site viable. Resources don't come cheap.

I would be open to it, so long as protections were built in, making it clear that while the site may be monetized, the advertisers will never rule the site.

Agreed. Reddit sold out.

I say just have adverts in the comments section. A little word banner on top or something like that.

I don't think he wants to. That's kind of important.

This isn't a charity. We should either have the option of paying or being the product.

I have always supported the idea. There is more than one way to do so.

But I seriously doubt he's going to do this full time. It sounds like he has some pretty concrete plans already. And I think the last month or so has dampened his enthusiasm for this place.
