Lab environment internships is a fairly broad category of internships. If you are looking for environmental internships try any Fish and Wildlife refuges, DEC refuges, game wardens, or water sanitation facilities. They are great locations for internships because competition for positions are usually less intense. The DEC tends to get the most inquiries but F&WL and GW get almost none and like having interns.

For medical, see if your institution has any relationships already with local hospitals. If they do then it is usually a good chance to get at least a shadowing position. If your institution doesn't have any people in charge of medical internships, ask the hospital HR department directly. Most places like people that show initiative, however, I find that emails are the best method of inquiry.

If you want to do research then check online for any location that has internships opportunities listed on their career page. I have found that direct website applications and Craigslist to be the two best locations for listings. Craiglist is good because it is usually less competitive, smaller companies and mostly local people applying.

Lastly, if you want to go into industry, I am a Food Chemist so we do exist, email the HR department directly if the company doesn't have any direct listings. Quality Assurance and Environmental Health & Safety tend to have interns. These are good opportunities because industry tends to be the highest paying position within biology for interns. The internships where I work pay between 16.50 to 22.00 per hour depending on a few factors. I have heard of some places paying as much as 45 per hour but have never confirmed those rumors.

Thanks! Those are exactly the kind of tips I was looking for. Tech/Acct/Finance I could easily point them in the right direction, but anything bio-labish is Greek to me.

If your friend has any friends at decent 4-year universities they should ask them to sign up for the internship listservs so they can get forwarded all of the opportunities. I imagine some of them are advertised online as well.
