Some degrees are almost useless outside of teaching/writing about that subject or just as a general "I have a degree" to get into management.

Yes, but society needs at least a few historians, if only to prevent too much revisionism.

Not disagreeing, that is where the teaching and writing come in. If you are a historian and you are not writing about or teaching the subject (including plain lecturing and public speaking) then how does your study benefit anyone but yourself?

Of course guidance counselors at high schools should be able to tell kids how many people are expected to get a degree in a certain field in order to help stop the glut of certain fields on the market. And even though that info is available to them they are not sharing it with kids. Honestly, women's studies is a fine degree for someone who wants to research the field or write or teach about it, but the number of people going into that field is too high to be sustainable. Same with lots of other humanities and such (including some STEM fields). But we are getting way too many of lots of fields and that is why they all wind up serving my wife her Mocha Frappes while bitching about not being able to afford their degree.
