Not a bump system, but something that gets more conversation going should be more valuable than straight upvotes to avoid "1 like=1 prayer" type posts.

Both. A sort by thread with newest replies tab would be awesome.

Chan. I just hate that threads disappear when they're done.

While a chan-like system would probably ensure a constantly refreshing frontpage it would also change the content being displayed. It feels like discussion based content would get to the top more frequently rather than a submission of a single gif.

I imagine subverses like /v/askgoat would flourish due to the comments keeping the threads on top. Meanwhile subverses like /v/wallpapers would basically disappear due to the nature of the comments there. To stay alive they'd have to start organizing wallpaper threads instead of just posting them separately.

They both have their merits in various contexts. For content based subs (/v/aww) I like the vote based sorting because it filters out the spam and shitposts pretty well (although using new on Voat right now is generally better due to oddities in the sorting algorithms and a lower volume of posts in general). Discussion is generally unimportant to the purpose of these subs, so having the most popular posts reach the front page is generally a good thing and you're not missing much if a thread get buried.

However, for discussion subverses (/v/askgoat) I'd much prefer a bump-based system. I actually proposed adding a bump-based sorting to Voat the other day on /v/ideasforvoat, based on the idea that it provides a sorting method based on discussion rather than popularity, and therefore encourages good discussion. It'd also make it so a thread never "expires", meaning an old thread can be revived through bumping to restart a conversation without clogging New/Hot. The nice thing is by having both people could choose which one they wanted based on the immediate circumstances, and ideally mods would eventually be able suggest a default sorting method for their sub (one of the very few things that Reddit has gotten right recently).

Voat for me. So much easier to keep track of threads without having them move all over the place. Or maybe I just don't know how to use chans that well...

Yeah I do that. I just don't like having a million tabs open. Just my preference though. I still visit the chans sometimes.
