There are generations that have never felt the need to spank their children. This indicates it is in the parenting.

There are also generations that have spanked their kids, I'm not sure I see where you're going with this? If anything the more recent trend in non spankers seems to correlate with the rise of misguided young people today. This hints to me that there are many different types of children who respond to different stimuli.

The argument that spanking somehow indicates a lack of education to me seems disjointed. To me spanking indicates a child has done something way out of line, nothing more.

There is this obstacle course and your job is to help your child navigate it. There are many methods that have been used for thousands of years. The most common method involves you striking your child, who is physically unable to stop the assault, when you feel they have crossed the line. There is another method that is not used as much that does not include striking your child despite them crossing a line.

Each child is different due to environment. Assuming the child has no birth defects. You can see this when your child is born and with all the other babies. They all act the same. Mom and dad (environment) alter the child's path in ways they don't know. This is where we get "monkey see monkey do" in reference to kids. They mimic. If a child acts like an ass, it is because the child's environment is an ass.

If there is real love, the parent will attempt the method of not spanking their child. Real love will force the parent to view each interaction from the perspective of love. When that happens, the parent will see kids are only trying to learn and love back. Unless they have been corrupted. Then there is little most can do but spank their children. This is where I say the are uneducated. It's not an insult. it just is how it is.

There is a ton of research on the subject.
