Well, they did say that only the financially well-off Americans had any slaves. That most people had none.

Yes, by the nose. St. Louis has many old jewish families that built their wealth on being the 2nd largest slave auction in the country. Just like the majority of slave ships were owned by Jewish companies. I wasn't aware of this 3-4 yrs ago. But when you start reading the Census records' names of slaveholders, and those who actually owned "Dutch" and Portuguese" shipping companies, it's amazing. 45% of jews were slaveholders in early 1800s vs. 2% of whites.
