I absolutely love dwarf gourami, their natural colors are just stunning. Sadly I've had pretty bad experiences with them. I've tried twice with at least a year in between. Both times they seemed to do very well for a couple of weeks, then you would start to notice this little bump somewhere, this would develop in a small ulcer quite quickly and death would follow not long after that.

Apparently most captive bred dwarf gourami now carry some kind of lethal iridovirus that seems impossible to kill unless you also kill the fish. I'd stay off of them for a while until that situation is solved, unless you have a local breeder or something.

I've had quite some succes keeping a betta with medium shrimp like ghost shrimp and amanos. Some of the wildtype betta's are actually pretty cool, I mean, I wish I could have a betta mahachaiensis but I can't get another tank and it doesn't really fit with the existing ones.

But I was never able to keep rcs with betta or gourami or even most small tetra. I think a combination of kuhli loaches and hatchet fish might be and look cool with rcs, though I'm not sure about hatchet's needs so I'm not sure if it's actually doable. Check aqadvisor.com to test basic comptability and tank size requirements. (Yes this site throws you back to the mid nineties, but it has some good info. It's not the bible and you always need additional research but it's a good starting point to get a general idea if your project is doable or not.)
