This is how you build trust with your user base.

Totally agree. Excellent move by Atko to introduce some transparency.

He'd end up like Edward Snowden and have to leave again without the passport this time.

What if someone posts something illegal, like CP? Would it still show up in the deleted log? I feel like this could cause an issue.

Maybe in the case of CP getting flagged and removed by a mod, strip the HREF from <a> when the comment is put into the public modlog, but not stripping it from the database so it can be reported properly to the authorities?

Exactly this. Upon being deleted if the content is illegal there ought to be a record of the url on Voat's servers for proof/reporting purposes, but I imagine any actual access would be removed to prevent any issues.

Mods should definitely have the option of permanently deleting something like CP or doxxing. I think one solution is if mods do that, it could get sent to a private modlog that only the admins can view, and they can review that to make sure that only things going against global rules get deleted that way. If mods abuse this, then the admins can remove their mod powers.

It would also be nice for the poster themselves to be able to permanently delete a comment. I don't know how often this would be needed, but it should be pretty easy to make it so if my own post gets deleted and I later decide that I also want it gone completely (maybe it contained too much personal info or something), I can comment "DELETE" and automoderator can auto-delete that.

My idea is to implement a special kind of report called "contains illegal content", for when content is illegal by Swiss law. Then the submission title will still be visible, but the text from self posts will be hidden and people can't see where it's linking to anymore. Also, when marking something as "contains illegal content" it will auto-send a message to the admins, like you said, that can judge whether it's appropriate or not.

By the way, aren't posts already permanently deleted when the author/submitter deletes it? For example, the at the top of AskVoat's modlog, there's a post deleted by a user, where you can't see his question

Or have the mods be able to remove instead of deleted such submissions, and they are then reviewed by admins before going to the modlog.

As a moderator of a grey-area subverse I wondering how I can comply with removing illegal content if the illegal content still shows up in the mod log. If anything, the mod log becomes a great place to go to find the exact things we prohibit users from posting.

I imagine that there will need to be a function to remove urls from the public log if the removal was due to something being legitimately deleted due to being illegal such as CP or other such usually banned content.

I suppose the real issue is balancing the need to remove the offending content and the need for transparency. It would be possible to blackout the URL while maintaining a record on Voat's servers.

I had the same thought. That seems like an obvious vulnerability in this system.

At the very least, URLs should be removed from deleted posts and comments.

I think it's good that we can see what mods are doing, but we still lack the ability to act on that knowledge in a specific and knowingly effective way. Which I think is a big issue since mod abuse was a huge problem in reddit and other similar sites. It's also important that we fix that now while it's still in alpha so we can make sure it works well, and so that people get used to it I mean I'd hate to be removed as a mod from the subverses I created but these kinds of sites should be for the users and by the users so it should be possible for that to happen if I do a bad job.

I'm torn on this. Being able to wrest control of a sub away from corrupt mods would be a godsend after seeing what SRS did to reddit, but at the same time it will also allow them to do the same.

if the site falls apart because we put too much control in the hands of the users then it was doomed from the start I'd prefer anarchy to dictatorship we need the goats to be able to make voat the site they want to use I'm willing to risk that much

I would like to see two types of verses. Reddit had 'republics' for awhile that tried to be a more democratic form of governing. Perhaps you could institute something similar into the code for those verses that wanted it. Once you make it that way, you can't revert it. Those who wanted to be dictators could certainly keep it that way too.

I would like to see a system of subverse "membership". Membership could be earned by contribution and if the need arose there could be a vote by members to get rid of a mod.

I was trying to gain support a method of hierarchical moderation which would self check. Basically mods for the mods which follow rules created for the community to prevent mod abuse. Ultimately there would be some people elected by the community as a whole who are responsible for preventing mod abuse and if they suck at their job they get the boot. This way if there's mod abuse you don't have to rely on Atko & admins to resolve the issue, and the userbase doesn't erupt in uproar. We'd have some people who could take care of it immediately.

More info here: https://voat.co/v/thesystem

I got a lot of support for it initially but nothing big came of it in a big way. If it's of any use or anyone thinks this should be expanded on let me know and we can work on it if it's something that looks like it should/could be implemented. Granted it's only one of a few ideas that I've seen by other users.

well I'd keep at it we're at the bottom level of a website that stands to gain quite a bit of popularity soon so if you can establish and drum up support for the idea now it might bear fruit by the time the site leaves alpha

This feature alone makes voat a far better site than reddit. Respect. I think I'll move here exclusively.

Mad respect for the FPH mods for removing content where people posted identifying information of other people's social media accounts though. Although this new public modlog thing kinda makes it pointless...I mean...now I can see identifying information that was meant to be banned/removed to prevent other-site harassment. Example of thread deleted by mod that I can now see

Edit: I do like this feature for the transparency though. But of course there are some cons to the pros, to think about...
