Most moderators are awesome, they remove spam and illegal content, they customize the look of a subverse and help make it grow and I am thankful for them. In order to do that though, moderators have tools to remove content (comments and submissions) and even ban users.
/v/askvoat had a rule where a submission had to end with a questionmark. If a submission did not end with a questionmark, it was perfectly "legal" for moderators to remove that submission. This did happen and people protested it. They are still protesting it and I don't blame them for that. The rule has since changed, but who's to say another rule won't appear soon? Should we take over /v/askvoat or replace it with for example, /v/askgoat because of this?
If you think we should take it over, think again: /v/fatpeoplehate (which currently has 23407 subscribers and is one of the largest subverses on Voat) has moderators who ban Voat users who are fat or who sympathize with fat people. Should we take over their subverse too?!
So, what do we do? We have a pretty vocal group of people which wants us to take over /v/askvoat, but if we did that, we would also have to take over /v/fatpeoplehate and any other future subverse too, wouldn't we? We can't be playing whack-a-mole and taking over subverses any time a new vocal group start demanding that from us.
If we don't do anything about this, Voat could end up with subverses where moderators are dictators... and we want to be different and better than that. Voat is supposed to be a place where users can have their say without censorship. Just think for a moment about the potential a platform with freedom of speech like this could have. With moderators, however, Voat can hardly ever be a place where users can speak their mind freely unless we step in and start taking over subs when moderators go rogue.
Can we do away with moderators altogether? Voat is all about voting. Things that people find interesting will float to the top and the rest will fall to the bottom. But what about existing moderators? I guess all they would need to do is report spam and illegal content to us.
So, what do you think? Should we do away with moderators site-wide? I for one am happy to experiment and try something new. I don't recall seeing a site with a voting system like this (4chan with voting?) and who knows, maybe that's exactly what we need? Or, should we not do anything at all? There is also a possibility of splitting Voat into two sections: unmoderated and moderated, where every moderated subverse would automatically get its own mirror copy in unmoderated section.
Please don't just rely on voting on this announcement, leave a short comment if you can and say what you think.
Edit: Thank you all for giving us your feedback. We will need some time to read through everything (1500+ comments as of right now) and think things through. We'll post another announcement to keep everyone informed about our next course of action.
