If you omit the long middle part, the true meaning of this canary is clear: "we have HAD 0 (zero).... to the date of the last posting/updating of this notification". Since the last canary update, there has probably been a gag order, National Security Request, FISA order, injunction, etc. Very concerning.

Can you explain this canary in lamen terms? It's really starting to make me feel stupid.

Sanegoati tried explaining it. I'm familiar with canary in the coal mine metaphor. How is this post protecting future posts?

sanegoat's fine.

if they gag our admins, we can never know.

so the admins always keep posting this

they can't be made to lie to us, so if they get gagged, the couldn't click the update anymore, cause that would be lying to us (gag's can compel you not to speak truth, but not to lie)

thus telling us without telling us there's been a gag.

Yeah I asked the same thing and read up on it. Still kinda fuzzy... Some folks here at really touchy about it. One guy shit all over me for asking. Not sure what that means.

"We have had 0" = "We haven't had any". That means ever.

The way this post was phrased makes it clear it's time to delete my post history.

Read between the lines.

Please elaborate.

Also deleting your post history does nothing, if voat was compromised they would archive everything.

The idiots here really believe those words protect them, and no one is saving off this network traffic anywhere....

Better off to regularly delete post history and start over. Like every 3 months or so.

@virge, and voat, PRgoat here

puttitout has responded officially to my query about the missing honeypot/trap statement.

legally the words can be construed in different ways, and the statement wouldn't hold up with the rest.

hopefully, intelligent heads can come together and find the words in legalese to make this addendum a solid statement and get it up on the canary.

in any case, ALL data going through u.s. cables goes into NSA harddrives. ALL of it. webcams, audio and video from cellphones, emails, your porn. ALL of it gets recorded for an a.i. to go through and flag for human checking.

THAT SAID

the canary protects US in that it tells us that SPECIFIC things are being done to voat, if it dies - - which is a double edged sword, the more items we add, the less chance they'll do anything without us knowing, but also, the more items we add, the less sure WHICH of those things it is that just happened; it doesn't tell us about the general dragnet that is our nsa data collection program today, nor does it tell us if voat is a trap/honepot (although that's not been standard on any canaries i've ever seen)

so as atko says:

All in all, you need to make sure never to post any personally identifiable information on Voat or anywhere else online, if you want to stay anonymous. The internet is a dark mess with tracking beacons almost on every single website. Stay smart, and be your own privacy guard. We do everything we can to protect Voat and its data, but how do you know your ISP is not ratting you out?

My words and Putts words is all you have, but never rely on anyone to protect your privacy. Stay vigilant and do your part to protect yourself.

(i archived your link, atko :)

edit: comma and structure

really? downvoating prgoat relaying dev statements and further comment on voat's new warrant canary?

In theory would a group of specific canaries solve this problem? Have a dedicated post with various bits of copypasta about each thing that gets posted every 4 weeks. If one canary dies that way, the rest don't go?

You have reason to be worried. Compare the meaning of: 'We have 0" with "We have had 0".

[–] SaneGoatiSwear 5 points 15 points (+20|-5) ago  (edited ago)

  1. the canary's only good up to the last posting. it's a semantic change. the sentence reduced reads "we have had 0 to the date of the last posting/updating of this notification."

  2. THAT SAID. there is something very ominous missing from this canary.

@puttitout OFFICIAL AND ONLY PING ABOUT THIS the canary is missing the honeypot/trap statement. OFFICIAL STATEMENT REQUIRED.

UPDATE: trap/honeypot aren't solid words. need better words to make it legally sound.

UPDATE 2: well, maybe there is a better wording for it, see my reply to @calliecat above

Somehow I get the feeling most of the people criticising this canary don't really understand how warrant canaries work.

2

[–] Galvanized_Dreamer 0 points 2 points (+2|-0) ago

I actually am unfamiliar with the term, would you (Or someone familiar) mind elaborating on the definition?

[–] Alduin 0 points 3 points (+3|-0) ago

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warrant_canary Here is a good place to start.

The usage comes from when coal miners would (do?) bring a canary in a cage down into the mines with them. If the canary died, they knew the air wasn't breathable and they needed to GTFO.

The idea behind a warrant canary is that the government can compel you to remain silent about something (gag order), but they cannot compel you to say something in particular. So you can say "we have received no FISA requests", etc., and the users just have to take your word for it. And you say that over and over, and when you stop saying it, the users can then assume that there has been some secret court order. For example, Reddit's warrant canary died in 2015, so it's safe to assume that they have been served with a request for user data from the government.
