Now lets hope and make sure this doesn't turn into the idiot-filled site some people on Reddit want it to turn out to be. I have been active on Voat prior to the exodus and, despite having read comments from Redditors who probably have never been active here, there at least was more open and mature discussion, less hostility and far less karmawhoring. I hope it stays this way.

The only people that want Voat to fail are the ones protecting the status quo. Everyone else is either here, going to end up here, or don't care one way or the other.

Not to be too cynical but every site I've been to ends up being that way. Myspace, Facebook, Reddit all started off good then end up going down because of said idiots.

I know it is hard to filter those people out and keep things good but once a site gets popular it ends up drawing more and more of those people in it, then it reaches critical mass then there is an exodus to another site, reaches critical mass, exodus, critical mass, exodus, and on and on.

This is why we can't have nice things.

I'm sure that more people on Voat will bring more of everything, including idiocy. It happened with Reddit too. That said, people will also bring diversity, so more niche subverses still have good contributions.

You've been a member for 15 days... less than two weeks before the mass exodus. Don't act like you're some uber-veteran that has made this site what it is today.

Not anymore! Voat just got shiny new servers and it's great!

Atko, please, please - set up paypal/parteon/skrill way to support you guys. I don't have a way to buy bitcoins (need ID, passport, bank verification in my country) and i'd like to support your work.

Keep it up guys!

Voat does have an official Paypal in the main page it's hello@voat.co I donated money that could've been used for steam to help with Atko's server

Side info: Atko is a legit Swiss name and he knows my real name now, I hope the cash-money helps It's not the USS Voat but the PBR Voat (patrol boat/voat) as it is based in Switzerland

Yeah I'd love to donate to try and get this site working a bit more reliably. Paypal would be perfect.

Hello World!

This site seems really neat. It feels like Reddit back in 2007/8. I think I'm really going to like it here. :)

I'm really glad to be a part of Voat so early. I want to see it grow and revolutionise the Web.

Having been active for 15 days I have witnessed many jokes about being 'inb4 the reddit exodus by Pao' and I always thought they were exaggerating. The lack of censorship didn't attract me to Voat; the mature discussions, the lack of both karmawhoring and hostility and the ability to build a community anew did.

Yeah it feels great, really looking forward to building a community here.

I feel the same way. I joined Reddit 8.5 years ago. It's sad seeing Reddit going from meaningful discussions to drama drama drama and banning users over voicing an unpopular opinion.

It's cool to be here at an early stage. I've never been part of a community that's just starting out before so this is an exciting prospect.

Loving this site so far. Honestly, Ive been dying to move away from reddit for years but I never really had a good reason to. Or a decent alternative site for that matter.

Before they abandoned all their ideals yesterday, Reddit was fine.

I don't know. It started to get fishy when they began hiding upvote and downvote numbers, and vote fuzzing always felt strange to me (why adjust the numbers when you can just use a hidden algorithm to move posts lower?). It felt like a way to hide vote manipulation.

For something so monstrously huge, I'm still amazed at how free and open it is. But I'm not sure it's enough.

While I don't disagree, I don't agree with you either. People say that you can filter out the bad stuff by unsubscribing from all the main subs and only subbing to the subs that directly interest you. Thats not really true though. Although divided by subreddits, reddit is still one website and as such, the particular type of drama and bullshit that reddit is known for is sitewide. Its that whole "mob mentality" kind of thing.

I mean, that can and has happened to many sites. Tumblr and Facebook just to name a few. Its just never, and still really isnt, so in your face on reddit. It kind of just ate at me over the years. The only reason that I really even go to reddit anymore is because I moderate a few subs that I truly do enjoy moderating.

I just took a look at voat bandwidth usage (I never bothered to look at these numbers as we only host tiny thumbnails and text) and I was surprised to see that the traffic in May 2015 measured up to 274 220.58 MB (274 GB).

April 2015: 210 204.70 MB

March 2015: 164 884.94 MB

Please post updated traffic stats for the day! Has your ISP been in touch?

Keep it up. Reddit turned to shit on this day. Perhaps set up a patreon page to help with server requirements?

Thank you for the warm welcome! And of course welcome to everyone else joining up right now!

You know, I think you already convinced me why Voat is better than reddit - apart from the whole censorship issue -: You have a dark theme by default in the settings!

[–] ChrissiTea 0 points 2 points (+2|-0) ago

And it's such a pretty dark theme too. (And the old vote system where you can see the number of up and down votes!!) thank you based Voat
