Well, this week I haven't really watched much of anything, so I guess I'll post the post I didn't post last week:

Hyouka (22/22)

Hyouka, I think, is one of the definitive SoLs. While it's tinged with elements of classic mystery here and there, at the end of the day it's a show about four highschoolers doing highschooler things and being gosh dang charming while they do it. Plot-wise, Hyouka has a series of fairly well-put together mysteries to underly the SoL elements, each of them setting the stage for a variety of character interactions between the main cast that make the show dynamic in spite of its relatively static setting.

The show is very obviously a PA Works anime, and its reputation for eyegasmic animation is well deserved. While there's nothing really flashy about Hyouka, the devil's in the details - it's hard to describe just how good a few people sitting in a room can look when they're animated properly. Quality animation pairs well with some great character design; Oreki and Chitanda especially are just fantastic characters in their construction.

I'm not usually a fan of SoL - I prefer that something be happening aside from basic human interactions. Hyouka, however, tickles my fancy in some way that's difficult to articulate and manages to get over that bias with simple, intriguing storytelling and well-written dialogue. Oreki's transition into a rose-tinted life is fun to watch and satisfying to finish. Here's hoping that the LN author actually finishes the series.
